Building Online Marketing Self-Discipline

Last Update: October 17, 2011

Do you have what it takes to become a successful online marketer?

In my opinion, self-discipline is a major contributing factor to online success because taking action is all about self-discipline.

This is probably why there are not more successful online marketers out there because self-discipline can be very hard to maintain.

Here are some self-discipline tasks I choose to do:

  • I choose to turn off the TV when working
  • I choose to wake up early to work on my business
  • I choose to only check email twice a day
  • I choose to visit social media sites only for business
  • I choose to take a walk or hike daily
  • I choose to wear earplugs when working

These are just a few things I do to help with my self-discipline and continue down my path of being a successful online marketer.

I think it is important to have conscious awareness of the things you are doing and what you are not doing.  Think about it. If you aren't aware your behavior is undisciplined, how will you know to act otherwise?

So tell me.. what do you choose to do for self-discipline?

Totally agree with you, Jay. I tend to obsessively check my stats, emails, and chat dialogs, which leads to a whole lot of nothing getting done some days. Make yourself a checklist of things that need to get done every single day, and ignore everything else until those are complete.

With all the discipline, you have to be balanced too. Don't hurt your health. You have to sleep enough, eat enough, and exercise. You also have to make time for family and friends and other pursuits, otherwise, you're going to get boring and out of balance. The inbox is a biggie. I've had to learn what the "delete" button is for. You can't possible read everything. Most of it is rehash anyway. If you have many email addresses, it can be time consuming, so I check 2 of them at the end of the day and on Saturday mornings. If I don't stick to a schedule, I go in circles and get mighty frustrated. IM is very challenging because there is must to learn, and I'm an information junkie.

Yes, having goals, takes and self discipline is a must.
As I am returning to Internet Marketing (by choice I went off to make a career in something I loved/still love), I needed a quick refresher/update to make sure I didn't jump into IM with methods that were out dated and irrelevant today (e.g. google panda changes)... So my goal was to spend a few days doing research and going through all the Wabinars :). Did that during the past 3 nights, yes only slept 2 hours per day in the past 3 days but hey, I am updated and re-booted now :)

Did some niche research before going to bed this morning at 6:30am, then went to bed and a phone call got me up and 10:00am Doh! Well, as I start to feel refreshed it is now time to go back to niche research and get something going :)

Jay, I have to write down (the night before) what I have to do the next day and make sure I tick it off. If I tick off everything I had to do I am a very happy man. It the morning, I have from 8-9 to for a run, to read email, make brekky, quick visit here then it is down to business, lunch and reading is between 1-2, then back to it till 4 before training or night work and it is the list of the day that keeps me focused.

I choose not to sleep yet until I finish all my tasks for the day.
