What Inspires Me to Keep Moving Forward....

Last Update: April 10, 2012

This is the very subject that drives my daily tasks, and also acts as fuel to the fire when I am unable to accomplish as much as I would have liked to on any given day.

Since I do not have children of my own, only the 4-legged kind, my inspiration comes in the form a hope and dream to be able to spend more time with my husband, enjoying life. Just something as simple as being able to go on vacation, or even a day trip at the drop of a hat without having to ensure that the time off has been approved and can be covered by available PTO.

The photo below was taken on our wedding day, back in August 2008, I was 29 in this photo, and it was the last time I remember truly being happy with the current state of our life as it was just before the potential for my career almost cam crashing down around me.

Since then I have faced the outsourcing of a co-workers jobs, as well as my own, the added stress of B.S. politics at hubby's job, not to mention the stress of one too many bills that can only be paid provided we both continue to bring a paycheck into the household.

While I will not go into details, all this stress has begun to take a serious tole on my health in general. I have made countless complaints to my husband about how desperately I want to quit my job as I know it is the source for all my "issues" but I am unable to without finding a replacement source of income.

And that is what drives me to succeed in IM. After all that I have been through job wise, I have lost my drive and interest in pursuing IT any longer. Luckily my husband supports me in all this, but as for the rest of my family, I'm not so lucky.

My parents are from the old school, and still think its possible to get a good job with a pension that will cover you well into retirement, but their advice is based on knowledge, and not experience since they have been self employed for the last 30+ years.

I have heard the reasoning that "You can't make as much money in another field" but at this point I just don't care. My health is much more of a concern to me then whether or not I land the job that provides a 6-figure salary and I KNOW that the earning potential in IM is unlimited and is driven by the effort that I put into it.

I plan to make this my career and I know I will prove the nay-sayers wrong, I just need to get past the bumps in the road to finally make my dreams a reality!

Being in a job that you dislike that much will definitely take a toll on your health. You absolutely have to do what is in your heart to do. Try to adopt an attitude of going toward something instead of away from something. It'll help you to stay positive and will give you the energy you need. As for well intentioned people, it's that old security thing. Can't really blame them. It's fear.Your self employed parents are probably thinking life is easier if there is a pension in the future, but there are no guarantees of that. Throw yourself into what you want, and make it work for you. I was once given this good advice by someone, and it's served me well. Boldly take on the challenge, and you will live up to it.

Fortunately, your husband supports you. Don't share this aspect of your life with your parents until your achieved a certain level of success. If you need to talk, vent, etc. you've got support here.

Hi Jennifer, The best thing I done was listened to Jay and got a whiteboard. You're right with the naysayers though. A lot of it and without having people around you, like here at WA, well, if it wasn't for here I'd have given up a long time back.

Keep your chin up...Things will eventually go the direction you want. That's what I keep telling myself everytime I hit a bump that throws me on a crash course to destruction.

All the best

I had naysayers when I started out as well...lots of them.

What are you doing, some Internet thing? What are you doing, spamming people? Blah, blah, blah is all I really heard.

You can't care what others think and in fact, those that think you cannot do it, should act as a motivation factor and are not people you need on your team anyways. Myself, Carson and many people here at WA can assure you of the potential online, we both came from humble beginnings, but had a goal of success.

We were able to achieve this success through hard work, dedication, and relentless pursuit of the vision. Naysayers didn't even act as a stumbling block, if you have the support your husband (which many don't even have that), you are in a good place!

Keep working at this, the turnaround to success won't be overnight, but it will be inevitable if you continue towards the pursuit of this success!

Great post Jennifer!

Jennifer - keep in mind this quote from Henry Ford "Whether you think you can or you think you can't - you're right". You will be successful!

So very true. I had recently read one from Steve Jobs that I must admit rang quite true to me and gave me even more strength to succeed at what I want: When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: “If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.” It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

That is so very true! I myself recently came across one from Steve Jobs that really hit home with me and has given me even more strength to pursue my dreams: “When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: “If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.” It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.
