If It's not a fit, Dump It!

Last Update: November 06, 2011

Don't waste your time. Time is your most important asset.

If you are anything like me,  from time to time, and usually during weaker moments, you succumb to giving a shiny thing or two a go. Nothing wrong with that so long as you make sure it doesn't distract you from your main focus. I think it's important to check things out when you're curious, but only if they sound promising.

Not all shiny things are garbage. Some of them are quite interesting. Thing is, that piece of software or game plan may not suit you personally. We're all wired differently and one software or game plan does not fit all. And that's quite okay.

You never really know what you're buying until you buy it and try it out. If it doesn't feel comfortable, or natural, or if you're bored with it, or if it has too many upsells that programmer says you need, then send it back for a refund or forfeit the cost. Better to do that than waste your time forcing it to work. If you happen upon something that's fun, and you think it can work for you, then that's different. It can possibly be another source of revenue and part of your arsenal of multiple streams of income.

In order to be successful, you need to be emotionally committed. It's not just about doing the task like a robot and the money flies in. You didn't go online to have a boring life.

You begin to recognize where your talent lies online, so best to focus on that. Otherwise you run the risk of frittering away energy and accomplishing nothing.

Just my thoughts for the day. Please comment on how you feel about this. Always interested in your thoughts and opinions.

Now, these online purchases do not include many eBay purchases I've made during 2001-2003...before I ever heard of Internet marketing at all...but do include IM and personal dev. downloadable products from 2004 to now. It's fun, however to get shiny things and see what they are. I bought a product from Greg Frost (Mind Secrets Exposed)...something I used to long to have way back in 2004. I'd look at it like I was window shopping. It was quite expensive...and I got it now for a fraction of that price. I was so exited about it...to find it was horribly done. The information in it was fine, but try listening to an hour of monotone voice actuation (digital-rendition of a human voice.) It sucks! So much for that curiosity LOL!
There is one thing that has consistently kept me from purchasing shiny objects of any kind, those I can use, and those that are rubbish...no money. It is nothing to be proud of, but I've scarcely put in much more than about $800 into online purchases...including Wealthy Affiliate. Most of that money went here...lending to the fact that I could see perhaps the greatest online investment ever. Anything else I've purchased out of that money came from recommendations from here. The only shiny things I have in my possession...and lots of them at that...are the shiny freebies!I agree with Jat also...we have to divert from this from time to time. One would drive themselves crazy keeping their nose in the grindstone all the time.

Actually Daniel, not having money helps to streamline your choices. Good part of the time people buy on a whim, and it ends up being a waste. Forces you to research the product and think twice before purchasing. So, it's not a bad thing. Forced discipline.

I'll 2nd that. Especially the thought about being emotionally committed. There is nothing like those ah ha moments when you are involved on that level and then connecting the dots is way more fun.
At this point though, I may the King of shiny things distracting. But I am getting it under control, I'm using one of those shiny things on a string to self hypnotize against my attraction to their distraction.

In a way, some distraction is healthy, otherwise you'll feel like a prisoner of your own game plan. You need to be flexible. But if it gets you way off course, overwhelmed, and very frustrated, then just back off and back up. Stay loose so you don't hurt yourself by being too judgmental of yourself. Checking things out is the way you grow, so nothing wrong with that in my opinion.

I agree! Sometimes we buy things and feel we have to keep using them to justify the expense. It the product isn't doing what you need, either return it for a refund or scrap it and move on.

Just because you bought it doesn't mean you have to use it. It's all part of business. I put it under the heading of research, 'cause that's what it is.
