Overused Words Can Be Irritating and Irritating Words are Irritating

Last Update: October 10, 2011

Here are a few of my pet annoyances.  I even use some of these words in my own writing, must  be aware of it...

impacted, situation, politically correct, oppressed, paradigm, milieu, trust me, like, it's like, um, shouldn't of (bad grammar), at the end of the day, with all due respect, big picture, the truth is, uber, outside-the-box, irregardless, I could care less, fed up of (bad grammar), differentiate, you know, like you know, like totally, gag me, whatever, purely and simply, let me tell you, cool beans, stuff, he's a riot, sammich, reconnaissance, thingy, orientate, human resources, neither here nor there, flexible, drink the kool aid, I'll tell you what, play it by ear, game plan, happy camper, happy dance, interface, will suffice, suffice it to say, catharsis, fullest potential, effect when you mean affect, affect when you mean effect, when someone says shut up as an expression of disbelief.

Something else that bothers me is uptalking. Is the person telling me something or asking a question?

Also, Buddha was not fat. The chubby Buddha is a 10th Century Chinese folk hero named Budai.  George Washington did not have wooden teeth. His dentures were gold, hippopotamus ivory, lead, and human and animal teeth. Albert Einstein did not fail math. In his own words, "I never failed in mathematics...Before I was fifteen I had mastered differential and integral calculus." Henry Ford did not invent the automobile. It was Karl Benz. And Macs are not immune to malware. And Santa Claus is real!

Wheew, Glad to get that off my chest!

What are some of your pet peeves and misinformation?

Wheew! I'm glad you didn't mention 'Awesomeness' since I use that all the time.
Good post Joan..

Although.. With all due respect, I'll tell you what I think about why these words are used.

I would say people are thinking outside-the-box and trying to capture attention, irregardless whether it is bad grammar or not.

But at the end of the day, if it get the point across.. I could care less if it is naughty grammar!

P.S. how many did I get in there!
P.P.S. I have a pink Buddha statue

That's okay Rob. We're all annoying to someone. I'm annoying too, as evidenced by having written this annoying post.

Revealing Dusan. Not completely. So what's wrong with pet peeves? What's that about Dracula? You're breaking it to me before Halloween?

If reconnaissance bothers you so, why not go for reconnoiter? Additionally and farthermore, I say Buddha, you say Budai.

Suffice it to say, for your catharsis to reach its fullest potential you must add to the list one two of my pet peeves:
1. pet peeve
2. father when you mean further.
So, without farther ado, let me tell you, cool beans, that irregardless of what people say, I could care less about words.
You're such a riot, Sammich!

PS Dracula was not. Vlad the Impaler was. He was not Dracula.
