Thank You Facebook...For Updating my Email Without Asking!

Last Update: June 27, 2012
I don't mind technology updates, it is part of the natural evolution of the Internet.

But, what I do mind is a data swapping update and this is exactly what Facebook has done to my account recently (and YOURS).

They have swapped my personal email address with an @facebook.com email address within my Facebook account. Take a look:

There was no official announcement by Facebook and no notification within your account (hey, we just updated your email address to something completely different). It was all done under the radar.

Why Did Facebook Do This?

Facebook wants you to spend more time on Facebook. The more time you spend there, the more ads they can show you and the more value it offers to their App owners and Business owners who drive the revenue within Facebook.

When someone sends you an email to your @facebook email it ends up going directly into your Facebook messages.

Now instead of someone sending you an email to your personal Gmail account or your business email address, they are going to see this email address and send you an email from right within Facebook.

This is also Facebook attempting to get into the free email account market, a market that is primarily owned by Google's Gmail.

Clever....

But how can Facebook go about business with a conscience when they are updating my "personal" info. I mean, kyle.wealthyaffiliate@facebook.com is not my email address!

What's next? Are they going to make me a Female?

OK, that sounds weird, but seriously, what is next. Are they going to change my gender on my without asking. Are they going to change my favourite websites to Facebook.com.

Maybe they will give me the following status update:

"I really love Facebook and I think everything they do is awesome! Mark Zuckerberg should be a GQ model!. Like this please if you agree!"

OK, well maybe they won't go that far, but undoubtedly if they are going to update your email address there is a lot more that the team at Facebook could secretly be construing.

All that I can do is hold out hope that Facebook does not sell its soul, even moreso than it is already. The IPO has made FB a changed company and I do think they are in a position where people are ready to move onto something NEW.

A few more data swaps and they are going to lose a good deal of their most active users and probably their business...

Upon further research, it could be something to do with protecting themselves from any privacy policy issues from various Countries.

Thanks Kyle.... My Friends told me of this as well... really p1$$#s me off. Many of my friends as well as myself are about done with Facebook... looking for a new home in which to socialize. Maybe we could just create our own social network... Charge everyone $5 p/m and guaranteed privacy... no info hijacking, no access to private profiles... just strictly social. interested? :)

Very interesting..
How do you think this will affect Facebook login API's?

saw this and was outraged too!

Yeah, definitely a little frustrating. Maybe not the actual email address part, the fact that it was slipped in.
