Too Big to Fail?

Last Update: January 19, 2012

Well, my home town of Rochester NY got a sad bit of news today.

George Eastman's baby has declared Bankruptcy.  Once the largest employer in our area they have been shrinking since the development of digital photography.  Some really bad decisions were made that didn't allow the company to respond to the changing marketplace.

So, we say goodbye to the Big Yellow Box.

RIP Kodak.

Is the big red X next?

My first camera was a Kodak Brownie. I kept it, and recently let it go. Maybe I shouldn't have. It was quite old. Also have an old Polaroid that is still usable except that you can't get film. I think Polaroid went out too, but was bought by Summit Global in 2009. Instant pictures may come back. Wonder if Kodak will be resurrected. It's a legendary name.

That is sad...2 summers ago I was in Rochester for a weekend a visited The George Eastman House/Mansion. I was so impressed because I love photography. Still have my fathers "old film camera" but have to admit it's collecting dust while I use my digital.

"Kodachrome
You give us those nice bright colors
You give us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world's a sunny day, oh yeah!" (Paul Simon)

Funny how things change.
