Plesk for a Dummy

Last Update: December 08, 2009

I'm kinda just writing this for myself

I'm the sort of person who sees a car as a metal box with 4 wheels to get me from A to B. I never look under that bonnet thing (hood for the US)

Same goes for this IM.

So having to set up a website & host it on Plesk filled me with dread. I knew I could do it but its such a chore taking my time away from keyword research

I've always given these techy things to someone else to do (my brother) as I end up chucking things across the room in frustration and impatience.

I found a good welshy video to watch but many of the tutorials by Kyle & Carson weren't step by step enough.I need an overview to understand how it all hangs together. Thats how my mind works.

So here's my overview. It may not be precise and feel free to correct me.

It is designed for someone who is at lesson 6 in the Certified Article Marketing Course

1 Register with 1and1

2 Buy domain - no extras

Wait 24hrs for it to be setup

3 Register with Plesk for hosting - K/C tutorial

4 Move domain 1and1 to Plesk - welshy vid

5 cleardown files - K/C tutorial

6 set up DNS to point to Plesk - K/C tutorial

Wait 24/48 hours

7 Ready to roll

So here's why. Buy the domain (eg abc.com) from 1and1 and it has a url number given by 1and1 (eg 192.168.1.1) and is ready to be hosted on their servers.

You gotta first tell the domain that it's going to be hosted on Plesk servers instead.

You then have to cleardown the 1&1 related folders. Beats me why. But you do.

You then have to tell the domain name that it needs to be associated with a different url number given by Plesk. This is the purpose of the DNS.

It should be ready to roll then.

Nice Rant...

I personally purchase all my domains from Godaddy.com as the nameserver process is MUCH easier than 1&1 and the turn around time is much quicker.
