In a nutshell...
World Traveler: I have forgotten the years I spent in South Africa as a child, which until 2003 had been pretty much my only trip outside of England. In 2006 I left my long term job as a writer and software engineer with the UK defence industry to take a full time telecommuting position with The Written Word, allowing me to become a perpetual traveler.
Author: I once wrote the bulk of a free book about Autoconf and friends, and have had some technical articles published in traditional and online linux magazines. I also had a partially completed book pulled by O%u2019Reilly in the wake of 9/11. I also have a new publishing contract for an exciting new book that I am currently working on.
Unix Programmer: I was exposed to the wonders of SunOS 4 at college in 1989, and have been an avid user ever since I got Linux 0.91 working on my first PC a few years later. I variously made my living as a C and Python programmer on Unix for the first 10 years of my career. Nowadays I'm lucky enough to be able to use a Mac for all my computing needs.
Free Software Supporter: I co-maintain some important programs for the FSF - GNU M4 and GNU Libtool (for which I rewrote almost all of the infrastructure and scripts for version 2.2).
Martial Artist: I've been studying and practicing martial arts since 1984. Starting in Shotokan Karate as a young teenager, I soon progressed to Tae Kwon-Do, Zhuan Shu Kwan and Jeet Kune Do. I've also dabbled in several other styles, most recently learning Pekiti Tirsia Kali (made famous by the Bourne movies) in the Philippines.
Biker: What can I say? There's something exhilerating about being exposed to the elements while hanging on to an internal combustion engine wedged between two wheels with the tarmac rushing past at high speed! Not too long ago I owned a Yamaha MT01, a Cagiva Raptor and a Harley Fatboy... in the process of cutting back on worldly possessions to make permanent travel easier, I have just the Harley left to sell now.
Personal Productivity Meddler: A major turning point in my life was being given a reprimand by a manager I respected very much for not producing enough output at work. At the time I had 2 paid jobs, was writing a book, studying 3 martial arts and donating my free time to the FSF. After a long hard look at my life, I gave up 1 martial art, quit 1 job, and scaled back my book and FSF time, since then I1ve become a fan of personal productivity methods that have enabled me to get back to a similar level of activity without the associated burn out.
