My New Baby

Last Update: May 04, 2012

It's been about 4.5 years since I built my last computer. Considering this is a machine I use nearly 24 hours out of the day, I figured it was time for an upgrade. Ordered all the parts this week, put it together yesterday, and have everything finally setup today.

Technical Specs
Ivy Bridge Intel Core i7 3.5 Ghz Processor
Thermal Right Silver Arrow SB-E Cooler
16GB DDR3 RAM
128GB Intel SSD
4 HDDs Totaling 4.5 TB of Space
Modular 750W Power Supply

The only thing I'm missing right now is a video card. I'm waiting for Nvidia to ship some more of the new GTX 680 Cards.

Pictures!

Pre-assembly

Closeup of the processor

The heat sink and RAM in position. This cooler is absolutely massive. The guy shipped me the next model up from the one I ordered and told me just to keep it to save the hassle of reshipping a new one. The front fan didn't fit over the RAM so I had to install it on the back. It's absurdly huge.

Everything in place! The case handles cable management beautifully. There is no gigantic mess of wires and the air flows so smooth over all of the components. I'm in love.

Finally, one last picture of my old, neglected computer for comparison...

Yeah. It was a tangled dusty mess.

I quite like my new one.

Sweeeet looking setup you have going there, I envy you :). I hope I will get the time to build myself such a machine soon as well

Nice! GTX 680's!! Crazy. How's the new Ivy Bridge CPU's? My current setup is a Sandy Bridge i72600k I had OC'ed to 4.8. I have two 128GB SSD's, two 6870's, 1000w psu. I had it water cooled but I didn't want to keep it maintained so i just through in a temporary cooler right now. I got the HAF 932 advanced..love it. I run OSX Lion and Parallels for Window 7 and use the Magic Touchpad to swipe between the two so the 16GB of ram works wonders. Running 2 x 23" monitors and have my 32" "work tv".

They're great! A huge step up from my old quad Q6600. I haven't really done anything to stress it out yet, but I think it'll handle anything I could throw at it with relative ease. The case is actually a Fractal Arc Midi - http://goo.gl/KqM4k

SSDs are fantastic. If anyone is reading this and wants to upgrade their computer for the most bang for the buck, get a solid state drive.

And yes, unfortunately I'm stuck on onboard video for a few more weeks until Nvidia gets their act together and starts meeting the demand for their video cards.

I second, third, and fourth the SSD upgrade, its the most noticeable upgrade you'll ever notice.

What case are you using on your new rig?

It's a Fractal Arc Midi - http://goo.gl/KqM4k -- I knew I was forgetting something in that list haha. It's always the most obvious one that you forget.

Sweet set-up. This is a very similar set-up to the systems that Carson and I just invested in. An instant world is a happy one! Enjoy!

It's definitely worth the investment. I still have my old computer and had to boot it up to grab some files and my God that thing is slow. I have no idea how I managed before haha.

Yeah, my new comp loads in seconds. It is amazing. You are going to love your new computer. I break things down into wasted seconds these days and every "page load" or "computer boot" that you have to wait for adds up to days over the course of the year. Same goes for a deep key keyboard.

Anyways, I digress...enjoy!
