Domains & Servers & Hosting..OH MY

Last Update: July 08, 2012
Okay guys I gotta question and I'm sure that its a simple answer for someone out there. I don't really know much about servers, hosting or if its better to get a domain from one place or another. This is because I have family (Dad and lil Brother) that handles this area for me, I just tell what domain name I want and I'm off.

The reason for this is they own auto responders. So they told me when I started in affiliate marketing not to worry about any of that stuff because they would host my domains for me. I figured, cool free hosting.

Lately we've all been wondering about the consequences (as far as SEO) of sharing hosting or servers with spammers. Because unfortunately this happens in their line of work. Every now and they have people that use the mailers for spam instead of their own list I guess. So I guess what they do is cancel the subscription of the spammer and then they say they have to rebuild the servers. Atleast I think its the servers that have to be redone I'm really not sure.

My question is how does this affect my sites or does it affect it at all? I hope I used the proper terms here but I think you all will know what I mean.
Any help on this is greatly appreciated,
Christopher

I'll try to explain in layman's terms. A server is just another word for a computer. They even look like a simple desktop computer. However, it has a lot more more space or for you geeks out there "gigabytes" .. If you are on a shared server it means you are sharing it with other websites. Could be 4 sites maybe 20...But nothing else is "shared".

A dedicated server is one that is "dedicated to your site" no one else is on that server (computer). This is cool because downtime is almost non-existent. It's like purchasing the community pool...when you want to go for a swim - no one else is there.

Having a shared server is cheaper than a dedicated one. One problem with a shared server is down time. Sometimes big applications on another sites (on same server) might slow down your own site. Spamming or SEO from other sites on your server will "generally" not do any harm to your site. If downtime or other problems happen more than 2-3 times per year...I would switch to another hosting service.

Thanks to everyone who has helped me out with this. After I posted this I talked with my Dad and brother again, they told me that they had tried to explain it to me several times. But, come to find out everybody on their servers is on a dedicated server, and I guess they already knew that it wouldn't have effected my seo anyway. Its just when they tried to explain it to me I just wasn't getting it. But I think I have a grip on it now. So thanks again to everyone for all your help.

Hey Christopher. I do know that email spammers can cause problems for other users of shared servers, especially as some hosts don't allocate your site a fixed IP address. A friend has a large legitimate mailing list and suddenly started receiving masses of undeliverable messages. It turned out that there was a spammer on his shared host and other receiving mail servers were now blacklisting a range of IP addresses as known spam and that included the spammer and also my friend. He had to fight to get his host to move his shared hosting to another server that was outside the blocked range. Just my 2¢.

So you have your domains hosted on your brothers servers and they provide hosting to others for their domains with auto-responders. Some of these are used for spamming so you are wondering if that could cause the search engines to punish your sites.

I don't see how it would effect you... every domain stands on its own. If the reverse were to happen... a real bunch of successful domains on the same server you are hosted on it wouldn't make your site rank better.

But for peace of mind you should go get your own hosting account. HostGator offers unlimited domains on a BabyCroc package for $10 month. I have one with over 20 domains hosted on it.

You could also host here at WA for free. It is all pretty simple. By your domain from whoever you like (I use godaddy) and then point the names ervers (DNS settings) to your hosting account.
