Be Your Own Screenwriter!

Last Update: July 15, 2010

It's on days like this that I'm glad I meditate. Through a rabbit hole all day long.

I like to think that I am a  moderately reasonable person most of the time. I can put one foot in front of the other and take determined, thoughtful mini steps in a straight ahead direction, all while pulling a few stubborn weeds on my garden path, and chewing gum too, while greeting people with a smile and a hand shake. I get good ideas that are connected to one another in an orderly  fashion, like a string of perfect pearls securely strung on silk cord. I think I'm as sane as the next guy. So why was today, today? Too deep, huh? Rough. Predictability is sooooo comfortable. Today, I wanted everything to be easy. No tension. No challenges at all. I wanted to be in control. I wanted to write the script!

Maybe that's not realistic. No, of course it isn't. No sooner do you have order, then chaos creeps in to mess things up. In this world, we have to entertain opposites: black-white, joy-sorrow, love-hate, victory-defeat. Well, you get the idea.  Do you think we can ever be in total control? Can every campaign be a booming success? Can every niche we think is a good one, be as HOT as the griddle cakes on my Sunday morning breakfast table? And...make us one-million-dollars?

Here's a morning exercise that will give you the control you desire, but only as you imagine it.

Sit in a room all by yourself, and review your work schedule for the day. If you are like me, you have everything numbered, and in the order in which you are going to take on each task. As you read each task, imagine the outcome as you desire it.

Here's your sample day, friends.

If you start off the day with breakfast at Starbucks, then imagine that the clerk behind the counter greets you with a smile, and hands you a cup of the latest blend "on the house" because you are such a good customer. Then, they have your favorite coffee cake that is so fresh, it is still warm from the oven. And you spot your favorite table and it is unoccupied. Then imagine opening your monthly bank statement, and the bank made a "real" error in your favor. You go home to a phone call from a dear friend and a  family member, and one of them invites you to dinner that evening. That is followed up with another phone call from an old business associate who is begging you to head up a "plum" project, something you have been wanting so badly that your socks are rolling up and down at the prospect. It belongs to YOU! You check your stats. You are $1000 richer for the day. You're going to treat for dinner. Then you write a couple articles that even you like. EZA publishes them the next day. You're #1 on page 1 in Google for both articles and traffic is flooding your website. You get home from dinner, and "My Cousin Vinny" is playing on TV, and it just started. There are fresh cherries in the refrigerator, already washed.

Don't you feel better? I do, just writing this.

Design a good feeling day for yourself every day. Feel it and BELIEVE it.

Congratulations! You've just written a script for your own life.

Fun post - I always image I can do tons in a day - but don't usually manage it. As they say aim for the moon and you may get the stars or something like that....

Joan, thanks for this.. We do change our emotional state/s thereby the quality of our lives by visualizing and affirming the kind of life/moment in time we want. It can be rather cheesy to some who don't believe in the law of attraction - but this simple exercise works. Yes, I use it. Sometimes to relieve stress, to gear up that winding down motivation. Or simply to reAffirm postive habits that I need to consistently practice to make something works. And in this zone, I usually get some brilliant ideas that I overlooked or never thought of before. And of course, the instant pick me up that can be recreated any time is rewarding enough. A rich imagination used to support our work can be fulfilling in so many areas . Just don't get lost in the clouds - sometimes I don't want to come down. :o)

The My Cousin Vinny was the part that really made my face light up. What a wonderful visualization. I'm sorry your day was rough...glad you kept your balance and your sharp wit in spite of the rough spots, though. One of these days you and I will be fighting over who gets to treat to dinner after that $1000 stats windfall. Take care, Joan! ~ Maureen (sending sandy greetings from Myrtle Beach)
