Looks like Kyle was Right!

Last Update: May 31, 2012
In my previous blog post I mentioned that I would be good if it was possible to get an article on page 1 of Google every time to which Kyle replied:
Kyle
It can happen every time and it comes down to keyword research. There is truly an unlimited number of keywords out there with limited competition and if you aim for keywords with under 300 QSR you will have a good chance of getting rankings like this all the time! :)

So I thought to myself right, I have to master this. Let's see if, by rinsing and repeating my formula from last time, whether there is any truth in what Kyle says.

Due to the time difference between the UK and the US, i know that generally my articles as SA get reviewed around 16:00. So I challenged myself to the following:
  1. Come up with a topic
  2. Find a relevant, low competition keyword
  3. Create a blog post tutorial
  4. Write an article, submit it to Street Articles and link back to my blog post tuturial
I figured that if I could do all this before 16:00 UK time, I could possibly get my article approved before the end of the day and see if it made it to the 1st page on Google.

Taking into account that my chosen keyword at Jaaxy was "tracking your link hits" you will discover that if you enter this keyword into Google, I have proved Kyle right.

The article is called:

The Truth About Link Theft, Link Cloaking And Tracking Your Link Hits

You really can get to the 1st page of Google every time if you do your due diligence, research your keywords and offer informative, engaging content that helps the reader in some way. In this case, not only did I get my article on page 1, I also got my blog post tutorial on page 1 too.

RESULT!

Glad to see you made it to page 1 of google thru SA and its a good exercise to do. I did this several months ago and found 2 questions that I asked myself afterwards....
1) How long will it stay on page one? (mine lasted 7-10 days)
2) how much more traffic would I get if it was MY website there rather than an article.... my math went like this : if 100 people clicked thru to your article from google serps and you had a 10% click thru rate to your site from SA, you would get 10 people to your site.......or if your website was there on page 1, all 100 would be going directly to your website.
Which would you prefer?
I'm not knocking doing street articles or any article directory, but you can see the difference with having your website ranked :)

Absolutely this is a logical approach and what I would suggest doing is both. Having two rankings is better than one and if you can get your SA ranked, then you should also consider targeting the same keyword with fresh content on your website, or vice versa.

The reason you would use SA is it typically gets rankings much quicker than a new to mid aged website and can be a good testing ground for content before you add it to your actual website. I always recommend that you take a 50/50 approach when creating content, minimum 50% should go onto your site.

Yes I do take your point on this but surely this is what I have done in this case. Both my web page and my article are on the 1st page. I completely agree that having your web page on page 1 is better than having an article there but you surely, for the purpose of natural backlinks, (even though they don't carry the same weight as they used to) you require the like of SA in order to give your site the authority it needs. Let me know your thoughts on this and indeed anyone else who cares to comment.

Thanks Veronica, your so right. I think if you get the research bit right, the rest just falls into place. I am getting clicks already from that article and blog post so gotta be doing something right.

Works almost every time and works like a charm. I personally aim for the lower hanging fruit (easy to rank keywords with lower competition). There are an unlimited amount of these keywords out there.

So when you say "lower hanging fruit", just how low do you aim for. I have been searching for competition in double figures only however the search volume is also relatively low. an example of this is the last keyword I worked with.

Tracking Your Link Hits - 171 Monthly Searches and 2 QSR

What do you target yourself Kyle?

I just aim for some traffic...I look at it this way.

What is better, getting top page rankings under 20 keywords that get 50 clicks/mth or getting 3rd page rankings under 20 keywords that get 1000 clicks/mth. The first is far better and the more rankings you get, the more cumulative the traffic becomes.

1,000 potential clicks per month is a big deal and it can be accomplished after just two pieces of content are created!
