The application of social constructivist methods to particular technologies is fruitful. It blocks the ideological recourse to pseudo-rational justification by showing that social factors intervene in the decisions that lead to “closure,” or the success of a particular design.

This version of social constructivism argues that the perception of technical problems depends on the interpretations of social groups or “actors.” The early stages of the development of an artifact often involve a multiplicity of actors with conflicting interpretations of the nature of the problem to be solved. Different social groups may assign different purposes to devices that are basically similar from a technical standpoint. Design decisions flow from these assignments.
