Avoid Getting "Thumped" By Google?

Last Update: August 20, 2012
I watched the WAbinar "Online Marketing Quick Start" where Jay mentioned how Google changed its algorithm and penalized a major article submission website for not creating original content. To avoid getting "thumped" by Google, Jay suggests writing articles that are unique and not "spun" (i.e., articles that are re-written from an original one).

I completely agree with his suggestion. But how is that feat accomplished?!? It seems monumental in its scope. I mean, the web contains every subject that has been written under the sun. How will I make my content about breeding white bunny rabbits, for example, unique when I know there are already 500,000 websites written about this very subject? This WAbinar is great and I will watch it again but I'm stuck on writing unique content that hasn't already been covered so that I won't get penalized by Google.

Also, if you grab content from a site like Amazon and re-write it or "spin" it, won't that get you penalized? Can someone help me understand this whole thing?

Hey Sonya.

The words "original content" are a bit of a misnomer. It's "original writing" that's actually the issue.

Here's an example:

1. "My friend breeds white bunny rabbits with pink eyes. I think they're albinos. He insists they're not. Who's right?"

2. "I just got into a argument with a mate over his white bunnies. If they've also got pink eyes that makes them albino, right?"

These two paras have identical content and meaning, but if I read the first and wrote the second, that's fine, as the words and phrasing are not identical.

Google will only penalise you if quantities of duplicated text appear on more than one site. That's why some people use plug-ins to stop Google indexing their Privacy Policies, etc. as these are often copied word-for-word by legions of different people across innumerable sites.

Hope this helps!

Hi

It really isn't diffcult to write unique content even if there are 500,000 webpages already covering a particular topic such as breeding white bunny rabbits.

The fact is that if you just sit down and write you won't construct your sentences in the same way as other people, you'll have different headings, and will have your own preferences or views on specific areas.

When you produce unique content, it just means that you're not copying chunks of other people's work.

I'm not sure what exact content you are going to grab from Amazon. If you want to give an overvew of a specific product you can write that in your own way - this will still be unique content. Obviously you can quote something.

My advice to you is to stop worrying and just start writing. You'll find creating unique content is much easier than you think.

Good luck
