Why sometimes you shouldnt wait.

Last Update: July 08, 2012
A while back I, way before Internet Marketing (IM) even came on my radar, I was considering going into web design (which is part of my daily life now, but not 100% as I wanted it to be).

In order to get started I needed a website. Name picking time! SO I made up a list as you do and checked them off to see which was available. After a while I had a shortlist of 3 or 4, whihc I narrowed down to 2.

And then it happened. I procrastinated, I ummed and I ahhed and no domain name got bought.

Then a week or so later I thought OK that's enough and went to buy the one I was really unsure about.

Too late. It had gone. And the more I thought about it the more it was the perfect domain.

Now I have a project I am working on and I have been spending some time again looking for the right name and the right domain.

As this project is IM related, it has become quickly obvious and down right frustrating that a lot of the names featuring Affiliate, IM, Market, Marketing, etc are already taken, either by existing sites, or just place holder sites wanting you to buy the domain for a ridiculous sum.

Because my financial situation still isn't that great, I can't buy every domain I think is cool (and because often they look cool to me but they are not) and I have to hold out for the best one.

I know though from my previous experience that this might not be the best strategy, and I would advise to anyone that if you have the cash and you think the domain is good, buy it. Don't wait too long.

Domains are increasingly becoming like property in desirable areas in cities, it's harder to find an empty one for cheap and pre-owned ones often go for ridiculous prices.

When you buy a new domain, set it up right away and don't buy another one until it is all set up. Just follow the earforce x41 model and you're golden.. :)

I recommend that ever time you buy a domain you run 10 miles. Not only will you have a bunch of awesome domains, you get in great shape!

Jay do you follow your own advice here :) it is a great advice but...
Kyle, like the 10 mile commitment I would think twice about a domain then, something that I don`t always do lol.

@veronica.l - Yes I do.

I agree with Jay, a domain can become a worthwhile domain if you make it when. Wealthy Affiliate is by no means a good keyword (it is now that there is a brand behind it), but through creating a brand the domain attained value, rankings and became an asset.

You could make "deansmarketingsite.com" and asset and a powerful domain if you wanted to, it just comes down to the effort you put into it. I agree with you that it can be very tough to find domains but sometimes a domain is just that, a word or a series of words that people use to find you. Sometimes the more memorable this is and less it is focused on keywords, the better off you are.

Absolutely agreed. I still always look for a domain with a keyword in it first though, as I believe it can still help SEO, but if that search proves fruitless then I will opt for something cool and brandable (I mean, take ApinaPress. It's nonsensical lol)

So is IMrush but it ranks for several marketing related keywords. I actually like ApinaPress and personally think it's brandable.

I like ApinaPress to. To me it means wordpress and straight off the press. It has a current feel to it and it is memorable, a great branding domain. The rankings will definitely come if you prove to Google that you create quality content consistently. ;)

Some search engines don't record extremely common words in order to save space or to speed up searches. These are known as "stop words." They work great for adding to your desired domain keywords when exact match isn't available. I have a list of over 500 if you are interested. I use the ones 4 characters long or less. Like MyOnlineIncome or YourOnlineIncome. So a search engine just indexes OnlineIncome in both cases.

I would love you to hit me up with that list! info (at) apinapress.com if you would be so kind.

Talking to a guy that had over 500 domains, I am fully aware of the 'buy now' element.. lol

I understand your frustration about the perfect IM domain.. but there is still tons out there AND the keyword doesn't always need to be inside the domain.

For example:
I have a domain called IMrush.com which ranks #5 for 'marketing courses' in Canada. Clearly the domain doesn't have any keywords inside it but is a brand-able domain.

Just think outside of the box and try to be original.

500+?? Wow... I thought my 20+ was bad lol.
Just an idea, why not go for the domain you want but add your initials on the end.
This will get just as much Google love, steal some of the traffic from th "perfect keyword" and you may be able to outrank it even. I know I do it all the time. Oh and the domain is not going to cost the earth either!

I usually add an e to the beginning of the keyword and that seems to work well.

or a country code, a number..anything really

Thanks! This is interesting, though I have to say if I was to do this I would probably look to use Klrrider's idea above, as that appeals to me more, though the theory is pretty much the same.

Salem - for future reference, if you want to change domain name providers you don't need to shut the domain down as you put it, you can transfer it whilst you still own it, then there is no risk of someone buying it from under you.
