Challenge Yourself Constantly

Last Update: August 21, 2010

Don't rest on your laurels. Don't be complacent. Keep reaching. Be alive!!! Do what you were put on earth to do. Sing your song as only you can.

Forget about looking for security in all the wrong places.  Many people think that by playing it safe, playing by the rules, they're being smart. I've heard friends say they backed up their art career by getting a law degree, or a teaching degree, or an MBA. How about that? A circuitous route to what you are meant to do in life, and what you want to do in life. Foolish! Sounds to me like the influence of well intentioned parents or teachers. All of those professions will gobble you up 100%. Why shouldn't they? How disrespectful to think of practicing "law" as something to do just to pay the bills while you are pining away for your art. How counterproductive to do that. By diluting your efforts, you end up accomplishing a big fat zero. Internet Marketing may not be your personal juggernaut. Think about your direction. Evaluate constantly. This is your life. "Cool" is being you.

I've taken a few side trips myself, but always somewhere on my chosen path, even if it was a side street. The older I get, the more I realize that you just simply "do it". Whatever it is. Commit to what you love. You'll find a way.

Do you remember the actor Leonard Frey? He was in the movie Fiddler On the Roof. He was interviewed once by a talk show host about his career. He was a painter, like me, and said he was acting because he needed to have some steady employment like show business. How funny. I'll never forget it. Who knows, he may have been a better actor than he was a painter. His real love might have been acting after all.

I think when you are headed in the right direction for you, things tend to open up. If they don't open, then maybe you need to re-address your direction. In Internet Marketing, take a hard cold look at your niche, and then if you are taking the right steps. I know that WA is an extremely generous bright community. People here are amazingly helpful and caring. I have a good suggestion as to how to make WA a truly magnificent place to learn IM: a One on One tutorial for each serious student. If it's an expensive thing to do, then charge for it. It does not preempt voluntary help from fellow members. Just a thought as to how to make this place even better, and help people who have a calling to market online, but are missing the piece of their puzzle.

IM is an exciting  tool for me. I haven't even begun to formulate how I want to use it, but I have fun ideas underway. You are all very much apart of it. I hope I can be a part of your vision too, and help you bring it about.

Hey guys, I've been away breathing fresh air, so these ideas have had more space to rattle around in my brain. Just sharing my stream of consciousness.
@DABK: really good to get your take on a one on one mentoring program. I think it would be a giant step forward and a time saver for certain people who can afford to make the investment. I wish I knew K&C early on. I made that investment, but it wasn't as it was described. Should be one real bonafied good marketer seriously mentoring a serious student. Will it happen? Who knows.
@maureenhannan: Hey Maureen, maybe I'm not tough enough, but I can't stand it when people are unhappy and ready to give up. Yes, I believe if you really want something, then go get it.
@andys43us: Hey Andy, I mean don't stand still. Don't be satisfied with little accomplishments when there's more to do. You can always take it to the next level. Stand still only to rest or sleep and get all your pins in a row.
@iFaith: Faith, that is truly the "gift" that you give others when you embrace the gift that is you.

Super cool post Joan! Thanks for a motivating and inspiring post. When we allow and risk being our true selves, we shine brighter and impact those around us - the world - for good, for much more! Success then becomes a truly shared experience that is magnified a thousand fold!

Great post Joan. I don't like complacency. But I am guilty of being complacent many times in my life. Wasted a lot of valuable time doing nothing. Your posts are very inspiring and encouraging as always. Thanks. :)

I agree. The tutoring add-on is a good idea. When I read the blogs here, I see a high level of frustration.

"Commit to what you love. You'll find a way." So simple and so right. Sweet encouragement, Joan. :-)

You're full of good ideas. I like the one on one tutoring. Would have saved me whole months of frustration.
