Invasion of The Shiny Things

Last Update: March 02, 2010

Greetings from Newbieville:

I've been away for a few days.  Not on vacation.  Not sick.  Just away from IM and WA and all things related to the internet.

After a severe attack of overload and a big headache I decided to put down the mouse, close the laptop, and regroup. It was hard but I knew I had to LOG OFF.  The Shiny Things had taken over.

I had been warned.  Everybody said be careful.  No problem!!!  I have great time management skills!!    I can ward off distraction and interruptions!  I can follow the plan, the process, the system!   I am Queen of all things organized!!

I never saw it coming when The Shiny Things took over.  The Shiny Things are evil and have no conscience.  They creep silently about the web and bore their way into your concentration.  The hide in email links and pop-ups and landing pages.  They are destructive and seductive and addicting.   I had become hooked.  I didn't want to be hooked.

So I logged off.  For an entire weekend.

Six reruns of Criminal Minds.  Olympics.  Movies.   Chinese food.  Wine.  Slept late. I relaxed.  Nothing bad happened.  My arm didn't fall off. My laptop didn't blow up.   It didn't hurt.  It felt GOOD.

The Shiny Things were waiting when I logged back on this morning, stalking my email.  I hit the delete button.  Only good things will come of it.

I really enjoyed reading this post. I think I need to take a page from your book. My head hurts too from all of the shiny things. It is tough being new.
