Surprise Phone Call

Last Update: December 28, 2010

Hey guys check this out.  Today out the blue I receive a phone call from a company wanting to offer me their services for one my existing websites.

The told me they could build me a optimized site, get me indexed in all the search engines, submit to all the directories, provide me the tools to edit/update the content all for just $49/mth.

When I told him I built the site myself, had the ability to edit/update at will, was already indexed in all the search engines and needed him to explain what further benefit his service could provide. He just re-read his initial offer.

What a waste of time!

So then I got to thinking about how much I have progressed here at WA with all the tools and education available here. The time and space to learn, fail, grow and try again. Questions answered. Personal & professional growth.

I have no need of those services because I am self-sufficient enough to build a site given the tools & training here.

The phone call gave me reason to reflect on just how far I've come. Turns out I understood more as much about websites as that guy did. Wow!

Thanks WA. I appreciate it all.

I get phone calls all the time from SEO companies. One was charging $20,000 for 6 months of SEO. Of course, I don't need them now, but the approach was all wrong. They kept calling even after I told them I'm doing my own. They're in business, so someone must be buying.

Long ago, an Amway guy came wanted to convince me to buy from them, through him. Amway would deliver loads of anything I wanted all at once. Since I'd buy in bulk, I'd save. Since I'd be a kind of member, I'd save some more. He went into a long spiel about how I won't have to go to stores, how much time that would save me.

I was 20 at the time and single. So I told him I don't really need stuff in bulk and, being a born-loser, I have not much to do with my time. Besides, I like going to store, seeing what people do, seeing the stuff I buy, shopping.

He told me: If I joined Amway, I'd save lots of money as I'd get things in bulk. I'd also save time, as I won't have to go shopping anymore.

But don't you think it's a good idea to not have to go to the store every time you need something? he kept saying. But...

I thought he was just a beginner or an idiot. Till I got into marketing. At that point, I contacted some of the people to tell them why their sales letter did not work. And how to sell to me.

They all ignored me. 10 years later, the insurance guy from 3 blocks away is still sending me 2 sales letters a month, still selling me the way he did 7 years ago.

You've got to give him credit, he wasn't asleep throughout the whole direct marketing course. He did get the part about don't just send one letter, keep sending till they buy.

Great to know that you don't need to spend money on support that you don't need. I do wonder though who broke their promise to protect your confidential information? It's a shame what folks will sell for a few dollars.
