Whale Ahoy!

Last Update: July 18, 2012
Many years ago my sister gave my daughter a whale for her birthday. Of course my first question what where are we going to keep it. This didn't turn out to be an issue as the gift was a whale adoption. The Humpback whale society was offering adoptions to garner funds so that they could continue their work.
The Whale's name was Crystal. Apparently they can tell the different individuals by the markings on their tail flukes.
This started a long time love affair with Humpback whales. Each year to get their ( my wife and daughter) whale fix they travel over to Cape Ann and ride the whale watch boat for 2 or three days straight.
After several years of this, my daughter knew as much about the various whales and their habitat off the Stellwagen Bank, as did the tour guide ( Whose name is Cindy). She was asked to be an on- board ambassador to help answer questions and generally help with the presentations. She was Thrilled!

Last year she even got to see her whale with a new baby by her side.

Now about 15 years later and many, many whaling adventures later, she received a letter in the mail from her buddy Cindy. They are having an invitation only cruise with all of the Ambassadors from the last 20 years. Sounds like a wonderful time. I of course get to work. So, off they go for a wonderful long weekend on the coast where they will be wined and dined and have a generally great adventure. There have been a record number of Humpbacks working the banks this year so it should be a fantastic trip. No Hurricanes to make the sea difficult. No cool mornings to obscure the view with fog banks. Just great weather is expected.

What can be gleaned from this from an IM perspective? Well, local businesses such as the Cape Ann Whale Watch could be promoted. Perhaps a travel site could promote the local hotels and eating establishments. I know that there are many B&B's in the area that would probably appreciate some SEO for their places.

Whales are big business with thousands of people searching online. Most of the easy terms are already grabbed but there are still some good ones with a bit of brainwork on your part you should be able to make a dent if you are so inclined.

Many DVD's are available from Free Willy to the most recent Big Miracle. Whales are alway popular on T-shirts and other wearable items. So put on your thinking cap and see what you can figure out.

Enjoy.

Awesome story Craig. It's amazing how people can latch onto a small sentiment. With your sister giving your daughter a whale she was instantly transformed into a whale fanatic. We can do the same in the marketing business. Give the customer something he or she believes is "theirs" and they'll always come back. It's the same concept as if someone goes to a certain bands concert and then it becomes their favorite. Or the fascination with trading cards. People want to connect with things and once they do they become hooked. It's a solid and sound marketing strategy.

Actually, she was a fanatic before the gift. Did start her on her way though.

I absolutely agree...all you need is to determine what that passion is with your audience and off you go. Market Research is what will do it for you.

I think there is more to your story....your daughter developed a passion, followed through on the path that passion led her on, had joy and ultimately success in the form of not only seeing her whale with it's baby but also by being invited to be an Ambassador and to partake of the unique invitation. Kyle and Carson keep telling us to use our passions in life to build our IM business and that we will see the rewards from using those passions. This was a lovely illustration of that principle from your family and I thank you for sharing it! (i am pea-green with envy btw - what a wonderful set o experiences your daughter has had from a gift)
