Getting Organized
So, I've been putting off going through my mail for a couple of months and it has just been building up. Add to it a bunch of work papers from some trips to San Diego for work and you have a stack of paperwork about 4 feet high if you pile it all on top of each other.
This week I've been going through it and getting it organized. It's been a long time coming, but I think I have finally accepted the fact that this is something I need to do.
The first thing I did to start was to acknowledge that I was in resistance to going through all the papers. As funny as it sounds, it did make me feel better to actually tell myself out loud that I was resistant to organizing the papers. After that I felt quite a bit better about the whole thing and it made it easier for me to start.
The second thing I did was divided all the papers up into a work pile and a personal pile. I took care of the work pile on Monday and Tuesday. It amazed me how many papers that I had kept that I don't actually need.
About an hour ago I started on my personal stack which consisted of a lot of unopened mail. Some of it dates back to 2008. Yikes!!! Today when I got home I was tired, so I decided to take a nap. I woke up from my "nap" four hours later at 10pm.
In the past, I would have been upset because I would think oh I have to go back to sleep in order to wake up early for work. Recently, I've realized that I can get by just fine the next day at work if I stay up.
Anyways, after waking up from the nap I realized that if I just went back to sIeep then I might just keep putting off. As a result, I got up and started working on the "personal" stack of mail. Tonight, I just went through it all. I threw away all the junk mail, and then I opened the rest of the mail. I put the envelopes in one pile and all the statements in another pile. Then I called it a night.
Tomorrow, I will go about organizing the mail. I find that's it's easier for me to start working on things when I don't put pressure on myself to finish it all in one sitting, especially if it's a task that is going to take 8-12 hours.
