Hey--That Guy 'Niched' Me!

Last Update: January 16, 2011

I went to the hardware store because my bathroom tiles had started coming loose. The clerk said, "Ceiling or floor tiles?" I said, "Floor."

He said, "Linoleum or ceramic"? I said, "Ceramic."

He asked if I'd was going to re-glue the tile myself, and I said, "Yes."

He asked if I'd ever laid tiles before, and I said, "No."

He then produced two tile adhesive products, and recommend one because it was a water-soluable semi-solid which would be easier for an amateur to work with.

As I walked out, I thought, "Hey, that guy 'niched' me! Instead of just handing me the tube of something closest to him, he drilled down to find out exactly what I needed and why!" I wonder what his WA nickame is, LOL!

I do some mean tiling. the problem is that it takes me most of the wall/floor/ceiling before i get mean. The rest is all practice. Another example of IM? Keep trying and refining until it comes right. The thing about IM is that it is easier to hide your mistakes. :-)

That's an excellent example of boiling down a niche to sell to a hungry buyer. Your longtail keyword must have been "reglueing ceramic tile in the bathroom as an amateur" :)

He didn't niche you, he marketed to you.
