getting stuff done

Last Update: April 14, 2010

I've been thinking about my way of thinking and how I behave.  It seems that I like to be able to do things in one sitting.  I like to be able to work and get things done.  This is fine for shorter projects, however for longer projects this doesn't serve me well.  Since I am unable to do things in one sitting I don't start on them.  Since I don't start on them I never finish them or make any progress.

I've started doing things differently.  For example, I just moved recently.  I was dreading unpacking.  Then I decided to just work on unpacking for 10 minutes.  I definitely have time in my schedule for 10 minutes of unpacking.   Before I knew it 1 hour had gone by. Working isn't the hard part for me, starting work is.  I think saying I'm going to work for just 10 minutes on anything is a great way to get started, once I'm moving it's easy to get moving.  Even if I just work for 10 minutes, I got more done than I would have otherwise.

Yes, that would get you started. You know yourself and what works for you. I think the scariest part of any venture is starting. It's like exercising. If you think you have to work out for an hour a day, you may never start. But 10 minutes you can handle, and then it builds.
