Oh, the Joy of Doing Absolutely Nothing

Last Update: April 11, 2012

Are you a chatterbox in your own head? Is there an orchestra playing somewhere remote in your mind, with you seated behind every instrument as well as holding the baton? Is there a constant conversation going on between you and you? Do you find it scintillating?

Really? Well, can you turn it off? Ever? Maybe if forced?

Do you know how to segment your life, scheduling time for everything? Do you know how to prioritize? Or are you a freaky marketing monkey, totally obsessed and going from one idea to the next, never taking a break or even noticing anything? Do you know your kid's names? Do you take time to smell the roses? Oh I know you know your kids' names.

Do you slip away from the dinner table, hoping no one notices, so that you can sneak in a few more minutes on your computer? Do you get annoyed when you hear "Where are you?" coming from the other room?

When in the shower, do you mumble keywords? And then freak out because you're covered in soap and can't check the numbers now and you're afraid you'll forget the keywords?

Do you dream about websites? And do you wake up in the middle of the night to jot down notes? Oh, I forgot. You don't sleep.

Can you visit any store and just relax? Or are you always checking out the next big thing to market?

Do you go into Staples and assess what's missing, such as the paper clip that hasn't been invented yet, so you can go home and invent it?

Do you check out what people put in their grocery carts to determine popular trends? Or if you have a health niche, do you feel outraged at the junk food?

Do you feel lost if your laptop breaks down?

Can you look at any website without changing it in your head, or borrowing from it for your own site?

Do you watch "Sharks" on TV and wonder which of them would back your project which you haven't started yet? What's it called? Shark Tank or something.

Can you take a vacation without your laptop?

Have you lost your ability to communicate in a language that human's speak?

HOPELESS!

The joys of living alone is that I don't have to answer to anyone when I spend all night on the computer. I can relate to a lot of those 'conditions' though. :)

Yup, when you live alone you can get very intense. Take care of your health.

I honestly don't remember the last time I could sit and do absolutely nothing... Even if I try, I find myself getting anxious while my mind runs through the 50 million things I still need to get done... On the upside I am finally making progress on all the "to dos" so I may finally make it back to a time where I can truly relax.

I know what you mean. I hope you can have that moment of doing nothing very soon. Even just half an hour a day of total nothing is restorative.

Hunh, what, sorry I was talking to myself. I lost connection to the internet for a couple of hours the other night and was lost. Had to try to read stuff on my phone. Ugh. Yup, I'm an addict. No question, No worries. Beats Drinking for a living.

What's the definition of 'doing absolutely nothing"? We work and we play harder! No slacking off here!

Doing absolutely nothing is not working and not playing. It's time out. Just stare into space, blank out, and don't think. Feels good once in a while.
