Marketers Are Mountain Men at Heart

Last Update: September 03, 2011

I watched an old movie last night, one of my all time favorites, titled “The Mountain Men”. Charlton Heston played the role of Bill Tyler and Brian Keith was his partner Henry Frapp.

The plot surrounds an era when the beaver fur trade was being replaced by the silk trade and western expansion was really taking hold in the U.S. Trappers and mountain men were struggling to survive the changes. Bill Tyler and Henry Frapp were two of these mountain men. Bill Tyler was convinced that beaver pelts would make a comeback someday. All Bill had to do was find the right place.

Bill Tyler goes through the movie in search of a mythical valley supposedly filled with beaver. He encounters hostile Indians, bad guy trappers, bad weather, and bad animals. Nothing in his path dissuades our hero in his quest for Beaver Valley.

A memorable scene in the movie is when Bill Tyler and Henry Frapp meet up after being apart for awhile and have a discussion about Bill’s quest for the beaver.

Henry Frapp: Say, you ever find that valley? The one that's always swarmin' with the beavers?
Henry Frapp: Where they run up on the banks and fight one another to get, in your traps? Hollerin' Take me, Bill Tyler! Take me! Beaver as many as stars in the sky.

Bill Tyler: Yea Henry. Yeah, it's up there.... A whole valley full of prime beaver. A man could live easy the rest of his days.
Henry Frapp: Was they like stars in the sky?

Bill Tyler: Yeah,Henry..yeah they was… just like in the olden days.

This time out I watched the movie in a different perspective. I couldn’t help but think about the similarities between the way Internet Marketers such as ourselves look for the place where we will find our reward.

We face daily obstacles, fight hostiles, embrace friendship, find disappointment at every turn, and still we keep going forward. For we know that one day, we will find that place where everything will come together and our hard work will pay off.

And just like the Mountain Men, we won't be happy to stay in one place. We will always want to see what challenges awaits us across the next mountain.

Good Luck on your journey.

Peace.

IM would have seemed so futuristic to the Mountain Men. It is all the same. It also reminds me of the gold rush. We're panning for gold.
